The most viscous death was being hung until you were half dead, and then quartered alive. They would then proceed to take out your major organs and burn them in a fire and dispose of your body. Due to the strong belief in the purity of the soul, the people would not want to have the soul of the person pure. They believed that this was an appropriate way to assure the man or women would not live a happy after life after the crime. This entire act would be done in front of the entire city as a chance to show the shame of the villain.
