Throughout the Elizabethan times in England, death was more evident than today. This was caused due to many of the differences between the two societies. At that time in England, doctors were not equipped with the tools or technology that we have in society today. This in turn caused many more deaths to be had in new born children and people with illnesses. Only 10% of the population in this era were expected to live beyond 60. Common sicknesses and plagues were swarming throughout society and doctors did not have the cures for these illnesses. This in turn created more death in this era. The utmost important thing after death during these times, was the fate of the soul, and helping to see that soul live on into the afterlife.
This is strongly evident throughout the play Hamlet when we see the emotions created when the ghost of old Hamlet returns to earth. They believed that his soul had been trapped back on earth because it had unfinished business and was not pure.
This website is created to explain the rights and rituals that were done by the people in the Elizabethan era.
